I have the pleasure to say that I've been part of Alex's "itsy" life since day one. Those first visits to the hospital were nothing less than a miracle at St. Joe's. Imagine my surprise when the nurse asked if I wanted to hold Alex. Me? Can I? Should I? How? Being a father of three I had never held anyone so tiny and so fragile, how am I going to do this? As I sat and waited for the nurse to place Alex on my lap, all I kept thinking about was keeping my elbow close to my ribs, this way he would NOT fall through. Amazingly he did fall through, into my heart.
I have been a witness to hearing such things as, "today Alex had a full half ounce of formula" and " today Alex ate an entire chicken nugget" and "today Alex had his first day of school". And today I can say that I can have a conversation with Alex, in French and English and how big his smile is when I tell him that 2+2 is "5"....FOUR he says. May God always be with Alex because today I am humbled to see how much he and his parents have struggled and how much more they have succeded. I will not call you my Prince because mommy and daddy have that cornered, you are just my little BIG hero.
Uncle Joe and Ti Paula love you very much.
